Cavity, cracked tooth, or other tooth reconstruction? We can help.

A dental filling is a white composite material (plastic) used to replace lost tooth substance, for example, due to cavities (caries), worn-down teeth, or broken teeth.

A dental filling with us includes:

  • Additional X-rays if needed
  • Anesthesia
  • Customized filling color to match your other teeth for a natural result
  • Smoothing and polishing of the filling
  • Hygiene products
Martine at Grünerløkka uses the patient's X-rays to explain which tooth requires filling therapy.

Dental fillings are most commonly placed when there are cavities in the teeth, but this is also a common treatment for fractures, meaning the tooth has broken. In cases of fractures, the dentist can rebuild the tooth with composite material. If a large part of the tooth has fractured, it may sometimes be appropriate to use a crown to preserve it, as there may not be enough support from a filling to hold the tooth together.

We can also use composite material if you are missing tooth structure. This can occur due to brushing damage, where the enamel on the teeth has gradually worn away. Discolored teeth can also be lightened by placing a filling. If you have a loose filling, it is important to have it replaced, as a larger cavity can develop beneath the loose filling.

When there are cavities in the teeth, the size of the filling will vary based on the size of the cavity or damage to the tooth. There is also a different treatment time depending on the size of the filling. There are several types of dental filling materials: amalgam fillings (silver fillings) are no longer placed today, but many people still have this type of filling from the past. If you have an old amalgam filling you want to replace, we can do that for you. Nowadays, primarily plastic fillings and porcelain fillings are used.

A tooth has several surfaces, and it is only after we have diagnosed that we know whether you need a 1-surface or 3-surface filling. You will be well-informed during an examination, and the filling size will also be included in your cost estimate. In the case of rebuilding an entire tooth, there is generally a need for a 4-surface filling out of a total of 5 surfaces on your tooth. If a large part of the tooth has fractured, it may sometimes be more appropriate to use a crown to preserve it, as there may not be enough support from a filling to hold the tooth together.

FAQS

Ofte stilte spørsmål

What does 'beginning cavity' mean?

A beginning cavity is caries in the tooth enamel (the outermost layer of the tooth). This doesn't necessarily need to be treated as long as it doesn't develop further. The best way to prevent it from developing is to brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, use dental floss daily, and get extra fluoride (fluoride rinse or fluoride tablets). If the cavity becomes so large that it penetrates the tooth enamel, it should be treated.

What is a dental crown?

The crown is the visible part of a tooth. When a tooth is severely damaged or worn down, a dental crown can be used to restore it. A crown is a type of dental cap that covers the entire visible portion of a tooth, giving it a new shape and function.

Why do I get cavities in my teeth?

In the oral cavity, there are bacteria that convert carbohydrates from food and drinks into acid. This acid can dissolve the enamel of the teeth and create "cavities" (caries). Cavities that are only in the outer layer of the tooth can be halted in their development and may not require treatment. However, if the cavity extends deeper into the tooth, treatment is necessary, usually with a filling. Several things can help prevent cavities: - Reduce the intake of added sugars and starches. Decrease meal frequency so that the teeth have longer breaks from acid exposure. - Fluoride: Brush with fluoride toothpaste in the morning and evening. Do not rinse with water after brushing. - Saliva itself has a protective effect.
