More about the treatment

Periodontitis treatment

Are you experiencing red, swollen, and bleeding gums? Do you have bad breath, signs of loose teeth, or changes in your dental alignment? The mentioned symptoms could indicate gum inflammation, scientifically referred to as periodontitis. After undergoing a consultation and being diagnosed with periodontitis, an individually tailored treatment plan will be established. This may involve a few or many visits, depending on the severity of the disease. Periodontitis, which affects the supporting structures around the teeth, is more common as we age. It can be partially hereditary and influenced by our general health, lifestyle, and oral hygiene practices.

To stop or slow the disease, regular dental cleanings and good oral hygiene routines are essential. If left untreated, such inflammation can develop, leading to further loss of bone support around the teeth. The treatment aims to eliminate the infection and stabilize conditions to preserve bone support around the teeth. The treatment generally involves thorough deep cleaning around all teeth, often performed under anesthesia.

In some cases, you may be referred for evaluation or additional treatment by a periodontal specialist. We will assist you with this. Severe periodontitis can ultimately lead to tooth loss, making it crucial not to remain untreated for too long.

After the treatment phase, regular follow-up visits with a dentist or dental hygienist will be required to avoid relapse. For active periodontitis, the treatment is partially covered by Helfo, and you only pay a copayment of 695,- per 30 minutes with us.

Ofte stilte spørsmål om undersøkelsen

How often do I need a dental check-up?

The most common recommendation is once a year, but this is adjusted based on your history and needs. During your first visit, you will receive a recommendation for your next check-up, which can range from 6 to 24 months. This depends on factors such as previous cavity history, other treatment needs, tartar buildup, and whether there are early signs of decay that need to be monitored. The recommendation we provide is always tailored to the individual.

Why should I use dental floss or interdental brushes?

When cavities are starting to form, we always recommend using dental floss. It’s beneficial for preventing gum disease and cavities in between teeth (tooth decay). Gum disease appears as red, bleeding gums and can ultimately lead to tooth loss. Untreated tooth decay can also result in losing teeth. While brushing removes some plaque, it cannot reach between the teeth, where gum disease and decay are common. Therefore, dental floss or interdental brushes are effective tools. We provide guidance and instruction on how to use dental floss and/or interdental brushes, as well as recommend the appropriate sizes during your visits with us.

Is it harmful to bleach teeth?

As long as teeth whitening is done in consultation with your dentist, it is not harmful. This is to rule out any necessary treatments that may need to be done before whitening. Teeth whitening products purchased abroad often have a higher percentage of bleaching agents than what is recommended in Norway, which can lead to damage to both teeth and gums. We adhere to Norwegian guidelines regarding which bleaching agents are permitted and safe to use. With us, you receive custom-fitted whitening trays that do not harm teeth or gums, along with bleaching agents that have documented effectiveness. Teeth whitening is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding individuals, and we have an age limit of 18 years for teeth whitening.
