How does professional teeth whitening at the dentist work, and how long does the result last? Does it harm your teeth, and what should you avoid eating?

What is teeth whitening?

Removing surface stains from the teeth (cleaning and airflow) will not change the actual color of your teeth but can definitely give a brighter and fresher appearance. If you want a more noticeable whitening effect, you’ll need to use a bleaching agent that removes stains from the enamel. Professional teeth whitening at the dentist is the only way to achieve whiter teeth using chemical treatments. A whitening agent containing approved substances is applied in a custom-made tray molded to your teeth. This procedure is done by your dentist.

Is teeth whitening permanent?

Teeth whitening is not permanent, typically lasting one to two years.

Is teeth whitening dangerous or harmful?

There are many providers of teeth whitening, and today you can buy teeth whitening online and over the counter in many stores. Only dental professionals are allowed to whiten teeth and can use products that actually work — and are safe for you. During a professional teeth whitening at the dentist, your doctor will always first assess your teeth and oral health, and possibly ensure that your teeth are healthy enough before starting treatment. Individually matched whitening rails ensure that the bleach is applied evenly over the teeth. The bleach you receive at Blid is safe and gentle and has a proven effect on teeth. Although teeth whitening usually goes painlessly, it can cause side effects. The most common side effects of teeth whitening are:

  • Tooth sensitivity: one of the most common side effects of teeth whitening is that teeth become more sensitive. This can make teeth feel sore or sore after whitening, especially when eating or drinking cold or hot foods and drinks.
  • Irritation of mucous membranes: Teeth whitening can cause irritation of the mucous membranes of the mouth, most often along the gum edge. This can be felt by the mouth feeling dry or sore.
  • Damage to the enamel: Approved bleaches should not damage the enamel of the teeth, but if the enamel is thin or gone in some places, bleach can get to where it should not be. Therefore, it is important that you get a thorough check in advance.
  • Allergic reactions: Some may be allergic to the chemicals in teeth whitening products, which can lead to allergic reactions such as skin rashes and swelling of the face. This is rare, and if it occurs, please contact us so we can help you further.

How does teeth whitening work at the dentist?

A professional teeth whitening treatment at Blid starts with cleaning and removing tartar before we imprint your teeth and create individually tailored whitening strips. These skins you take home with you, along with the bleach. Together, we agree on whether you should choose day or night whitening and how many days you should bleach, depending on your desires and needs. Normally this is about a week, but someone is satisfied after 4-5 days and someone chooses more than a week. We provide guidance on how to achieve the best possible results.

If it has been more than six months since your last dental check-up, we would like you to first book an appointment for a full examination and cleaning. This is so that we can be sure that you are caries free and have healthy conditions in your mouth, which is very important before starting a teeth whitening treatment. If you have had a dental check-up somewhere other than at Blid in the last six months, we would like you to bring a journal transcript and x-rays from here. You can get this by calling or emailing this clinic. Then we get the best possible overview of your dental history and are ready to get started.

What should you keep in mind after whitening your teeth?

After a teeth whitening, the teeth are more sensitive and discolor somewhat more easily. Therefore, use fluoride rinses every day and avoid foods and drinks with strong colors such as coffee, red wine and blueberries during the bleaching period and 2-3 days after. If the white color subsides only a few months later, this may be due to plaque on the teeth that can be removed at the dentist or dental hygienist. We offer thorough cleansing as a separate treatment if you only want to clean and nothing else. This can be a nice option in these cases. If you experience severe icing during or after the treatment period, we would like you to contact us so that we can help you further.
