Root canal treatment is performed when there is an infection in the nerve. We remove the nerves and blood vessels, and the dentist places root filling material and a temporary filling. Root canal treatment is necessary to preserve the tooth and avoid tooth extraction and more serious complications.

Root canal treatment is a procedure performed after an examination has confirmed an infection in the nerve of the tooth. At Blid, you pay the same regardless of which tooth needs root canal treatment. The procedure is carried out by a dentist and involves the removal of nerves and blood vessels (pulp, in technical terms) inside the tooth, after which the pulp is replaced with root filling material. Root canal treatment is necessary to preserve the tooth and avoid tooth extraction and more serious complications.

Our skilled dentists will assist you with root canal treatment.

A root canal treatment includes:
  • X-rays as needed
  • Anesthesia as needed
  • Root filling material and covering
  • Temporary filling
  • Hygiene supplies

If the nerve of the tooth is dead, irritated, or infected, a root canal treatment is needed to preserve the tooth. This occurs due to inflammation in the tooth's nerve, which can be caused by cavities, deep fillings, cracks in the tooth or filling, or crown treatment that has caused cracks, leading to a bacterial infection in the root of the tooth. Without treatment, bacteria can spread to the root tip, causing inflammation in the jawbone. If this inflammation becomes visible, a "pimple" (fistula) may appear on the gum. This condition can be painful, but often it is not, and it may be detected during an annual check-up with a dentist or dental hygienist.

The channels in the root are cleaned to ensure all infection is gone. Once this is done, filling material is used to replace the nerve with new material, which is what is called a root filling. The treatment can be done in one visit, but sometimes it requires two or more visits. If the root canal is complicated, it may require multiple visits to ensure a thorough result.

When the tooth is fully root-filled, a temporary filling is placed on top of the tooth to isolate it from bacteria. Once the tooth is symptom-free, it needs to be restored to its natural shape, either with composite (filling therapy) or porcelain/crown.

FAQS

Ofte stilte spørsmål

What is a dental crown?

The crown is the visible part of a tooth. When a tooth is severely damaged or worn down, a dental crown can be used to restore it. A crown is a type of dental cap that covers the entire visible portion of a tooth, giving it a new shape and function.

How to maintain a dental crown?

Even if parts of a tooth have been replaced with a crown, it is important to maintain it as if it were a healthy tooth. This includes brushing with fluoride toothpaste twice a day and using dental floss or interdental brushes along the edge of the crown. If you neglect oral hygiene, cavities can develop under the crown or at the edge of the crown over time.

What is OPG and when is it used?

An OPG is a panoramic X-ray that gives us a complete view of your teeth, roots, and jaw. We often use OPGs to determine if wisdom teeth need to be removed. The X-ray shows the tooth's position and helps us assess any potential risks. OPGs are also useful for diagnosing jaw problems and planning treatment with aligners or invisible braces.

What happens if I don't get a root canal?

Our goal is to keep your tooth for as long as possible without needing to extract it. That's why a root canal is a good option. If you wait too long to get a root canal for a tooth that needs it, the infection can spread further, and eventually, the tooth may need to be extracted. If you experience toothache for a prolonged period, the risk of infection is high. If you have an untreated abscess for a long time, the infection is likely to spread, making a root canal treatment too late. In that case, the next step would be to remove the tooth entirely.

How long does a root canal take?

The treatment time varies depending on the complexity of the tooth—both in terms of the number of canals, placement, etc. For the treatment to be successful, and thus for you to preserve your tooth, we take the time we need. Often, the treatment is divided into several sessions, usually two or three, and it takes about 60-90 minutes. This can be a complex treatment, so it is important that you do not postpone the visit once you start. We have good experience with root canal treatments. If the tooth is very complex, we also work closely with specialists. In an examination, we will provide you with answers regarding the treatment course, time, and number of canals. We will also provide all the information you need to feel confident that you are in good hands.
