Bite splint at Blid

For pain or discomfort in the jaw joint and/or masticatory muscles, a bite splint may be necessary as part of the treatment. Treatment with a bite splint at our clinic includes:  

• Examination of the jaw joint and masticatory muscles
• Additional X-rays if necessary  
• Impressions of the teeth in the upper and lower jaw for the fabrication of the splint
• Delivery and adjustment of the splint  
• Follow-up appointment with any necessary adjustments after a few weeks

Costs related to the dental technician are included.  

Issues related to the jaw and masticatory muscles are relatively common. This can involve pain, which often leads to headaches, locking of the jaw, clicking sounds, and difficulties in opening and closing the mouth normally. The causes of such issues are often complex, with stress typically being a triggering and exacerbating factor. Other causes can include teeth grinding, clenching, or tongue thrusting. The dentist will investigate these causes and examine whether there are other underlying factors contributing to the issues.  

Treatment for problems from masticatory muscles and the jaw joint involves information, pain relief, relaxation exercises, and possibly a bite splint. The bite splint, also called a stabilization splint, will help relax the muscles and can thus reduce related issues. The bite splint can also serve as protection against tooth wear if one is experiencing this problem.
