More about the treatment

Comprehensive tooth extraction

If a tooth is diseased and cannot be treated, it may be necessary to extract the tooth. This can occur in cases of infection, cracks in the tooth, or untreated cavities. X-rays, anesthesia, and hygiene supplies are included. We believe that tooth extraction should be a last resort, and our recommendation is to try to keep your natural teeth if the tooth can be repaired. If the tooth can no longer be repaired or you do not wish to keep it, extraction is an option.

In some cases, the tooth may have large or curved roots, or it may be firmly embedded in the bone, making it somewhat more difficult and time-consuming to remove. This is most often the case with molars. Complicated tooth extractions with us include:

  • Additional X-rays if needed
  • Anesthesia
  • Extraction of the tooth
  • Follow-up if necessary
  • Hygiene supplies

Sometimes a tooth must be removed to avoid infection and pain. Other times, a tooth may be extracted in connection with orthodontic treatment.

Before and after a tooth extraction, certain precautions should be taken: eat well before your appointment, and after the tooth is removed, it is very important not to eat or drink for 2-3 hours. After the tooth is extracted, swelling in the area is common, and some may experience pain and slight bleeding in the area where the tooth was removed. We will provide you with bite compresses and pain-relieving tablets to help stop any bleeding.

In some cases, it may be desirable to have a replacement after a tooth is removed. This could be an implant, a bridge, or a denture.

Ofte stilte spørsmål om undersøkelsen

How often do I need a dental check-up?

The most common recommendation is once a year, but this is adjusted based on your history and needs. During your first visit, you will receive a recommendation for your next check-up, which can range from 6 to 24 months. This depends on factors such as previous cavity history, other treatment needs, tartar buildup, and whether there are early signs of decay that need to be monitored. The recommendation we provide is always tailored to the individual.

Why should I use dental floss or interdental brushes?

When cavities are starting to form, we always recommend using dental floss. It’s beneficial for preventing gum disease and cavities in between teeth (tooth decay). Gum disease appears as red, bleeding gums and can ultimately lead to tooth loss. Untreated tooth decay can also result in losing teeth. While brushing removes some plaque, it cannot reach between the teeth, where gum disease and decay are common. Therefore, dental floss or interdental brushes are effective tools. We provide guidance and instruction on how to use dental floss and/or interdental brushes, as well as recommend the appropriate sizes during your visits with us.

What does 'beginning cavity' mean?

A beginning cavity is caries in the tooth enamel (the outermost layer of the tooth). This doesn't necessarily need to be treated as long as it doesn't develop further. The best way to prevent it from developing is to brush your teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, use dental floss daily, and get extra fluoride (fluoride rinse or fluoride tablets). If the cavity becomes so large that it penetrates the tooth enamel, it should be treated.

FAQS

Ofte stilte spørsmål

Do I have to have my wisdom teeth extracted?

Wisdom teeth need to be extracted if they erupt in the wrong position in the mouth and cause problems for other teeth. They should also be removed if you are experiencing pain, inflammation, or large cavities (caries). If you are having pain or issues with your wisdom teeth, we recommend booking an examination so that we can assess whether you should have one or more of your wisdom teeth removed.

What is a bridge?

If one or more teeth are missing, and you want to replace them, a dental bridge can be made. This involves creating replacements for the missing teeth, which are then attached to the remaining teeth on either side of the gap. The remaining healthy teeth must first be shaped/ground down by the dentist to provide a good foundation for the bridge.
