If the tooth's nerve is dead, irritated, or infected, a root canal treatment is necessary to preserve the tooth. This can be caused by, for example, cavities, deep fillings, or previous crown treatment. In root canal treatment, the bacteria are removed, and control is achieved over the infection in the tooth.

In cases where standard root canal treatment alone does not resolve the issue, an apicoectomy can help address the problem. Unlike root canal treatment, an apicoectomy is a surgical procedure where a small part (from 3 to 5 millimeters) of the root tip is removed. You will, of course, receive sufficient anesthesia so that you, as a patient, experience the procedure as painless.

After treatment, it is common to experience pain and swelling. You will receive the necessary pain relief to alleviate this after the procedure.
